Denis Goldberg House of Hope

October 29, 2021

Lalela’s young artists have made their mark at the Denis Goldberg House of Hope (DGHOH) with their beautiful work appearing in a striking collage-style mural that takes pride of place in the new gallery, which serves as a memorial to the late anti-apartheid icon.

The DGHOH is an arts-and-culture education centre in Hout Bay, Cape Town, which, like Lalela,  provides access to art, dance, music and other activities for children and youth from the surrounding communities. The magnificent building was designed by award-winning architect Jo Noero. It comprises, among its intriguing spaces, a large open gallery housing an exhibition on Denis’s life along with his expansive art collection.

We couldn’t be prouder that we were invited to get involved! Our learners were given free rein to make cartoon-style drawings based on photographs of Denis as well as colourful descriptions of his character traits. Each child picked a trait that resonated (these were provided by the DGHOH!), and based their drawing on the descriptions – from his humility to his sense of humour, his strongly held principles to his down-to-earth nature, his love of the arts and his deep care for our nation’s children.

The result was a wildly creative and quirky selection of drawings, which the DGHOH loved so much that they chose to collate them into a wonderful  collage-style mural comprising a selection of the works – all masterfully curated and collated by Brendon Bell-Roberts.

We highly recommend a visit to the museum!
